Newspapers
Revised January 2012 SR
MeL has newspapers in several places.
1. Gale InfoTrac Newsstand has approximately 1000 newspapers from across the U.S. and around the world. Users can search on the already familiar PowerSearch platform. News results are also pulled and displayed in many of the searches, as we have seen with the News tabs.
Having international newspapers available to Michigan residents offers a great opportunity to gain insight into the different views that are reported in different countries and regions.
Start at mel.org. Click on the databases "swoop" and then on INFOTRAC NEWSSTAND and go to ADVANCED SEARCH. Type IRAN in the first box, type URANIUM ENRICHMENT in the second box, and type Hong Kong in the third box. Leave all the defaults set at keyword. Do the search and allow the class to look at the results list.
Give the class a few minutes to look at the various newspaper sources as you scroll down the page. They are from all over the world.
2. MeL also has the Lansing State Journal from ProQuest. Go to the MeL Databases list and select that. The search interface is quite intuitive. Type in dragon boat race in the box and do the search. Look at the results. Click on the first article, scroll down slowly, and let the class see what details are given at the bottom of the page.
