When a student locates a digital book record in the library’s catalog (OCLC MARC records will be available), they click on the URL to go to the MLC School Download Library site where the book may be checked out. Students may check out up to 10 titles per checkout. Digital books are checked out for 14 days and are automatically removed from their records when the checkout time expires. Adobe titles may be returned early, but downloadable audio titles cannot, because of publisher restrictions. Students may access a synopsis of the book without downloading the entire file, or they may forward a title to a friend for recommendation. When selected, the titles go into a bookbag, where up to 12 titles may remain for 2 hours before checking out. The students may read (or listen to) the book on their PC or download the information to another devise for both the eBook and downloadable audio, or burn a downloadable audio book to a CD. Timing is embedded in the content that will deactivate when the checkout period has expired. Prior to checking out a MLC School Download Library title, patrons will need to install free digital media software on their PC or PDA. This will activate the DRM (Digital Rights Management) that protects the copyright of the digital book. The required software varies by digital book format (e.g. Adobe Reader, Mobipocket Reader, OverDrive Media Console).
