Congratulations to Sandy Yee!

Our congratulations to Sandy Yee, Dean of Libraries at Wayne State University and MLC Board member, who has been elected to a six-year term on the OCLC Board of Trustees!

“I look forward to helping to smooth the governance transition by working closely with colleagues on the 2008-2009 Members Council,” said Ms. Yee, who will make the transition from Members Council President to Board member. “After reading the documents and listening closely to the discussions about this move, I am confident that OCLC is positioned to continue to grow and add value to the membership worldwide.”

For the complete news release from OCLC, see MLC’s Communique post.

MeLCat and NoveList now work together!

All MeL accounts for NoveList now have a link from each record to MeLCat.  Users can look up a book in NoveList, then click on the MeLCat link to find out which MeLCat library owns it.

In addition, any library that wants to display a link to its own online catalog can contact the MeL databases support staff at:

MeL can help you find the truth

How does the public distinguish fact from fallacy? How can we help people deal with the age of information overload and misinformation. Why do we need to get students and faculty and the public using MeL?

This is an article about information literacy in today’s world. It’s well worth reading and well worth sharing, so please feel free to forward to as many folks as you’d like to!

EBSCO launches new interface for NoveList

NoveList is a popular readers’ advisory database for children through adults.

In mid-March, a new interface was launched to make it even easier for users to find information about favorite books, authors, award winners, and recommended “good reads.”

The Home page has a monthly Spotlight in the center of the screen. The right column offers information for using the database and help for library staff doing Readers’ Advisory

The left column focuses on content for various reader groups: adults, teens, older kids, younger kids, and curriculum connections for teachers.

NoveList can be searched from a very visible search box at the top the home page. Results are divided into various materials by helpful tabs.

For a quick video tour of the new NoveList interface, go to the NoveList Home page and click on Tour NoveList on the right side, or click here:

Rave reviews for MeL Databases Training!

These are just a few comments from recent classes taught by the MeL Databases trainers:

It was great!

Great chance to be exposed to these resources, opens up a lot of possibilities.

Lots of tips regarding how to do specific things!

WOW - so useful! Great presentation, easy to follow, allows for self-education.

Great overview — this introduced me to many new features (and I consider myself a regular user).

So much available - I learned a lot.

Great exposure for our staff!

And the BEST kind of reaction — “I went right back to my library the next day and could use a database I learned about to help my patrons!”

For information on scheduling a free class for your staff, contact Suzanne Robinson at MLC.

The Library of Congress and Flickr

Check out the Library of Congress blog:

Great story about  the launch of a brand-new pilot project with Flickr, the enormously popular photo-sharing site.

More than 3,000 photos from two of the most popular collections are being made available on a new Flickr page, to include only images for which no copyright restrictions are known to exist.

“We want people to tag, comment and make notes on the images, just like any other Flickr photo, which will benefit not only the community but also the collections themselves.”

The Well-Wired Use Libraries More

New York Times
The Well-Wired Use Libraries More

By ALEX MINDLIN

Published: January 7, 2008

Library use is far more prevalent among people who have a broadband Internet connection at home or at work, according to a new study. The finding counters a decade-old assumption that libraries serve as a “bridge” for people who want to use the Internet, but have only dial-up connections, or no access at all.

“People in the low-access population don’t often think, ‘If I only had the Internet, I’d be in a different position,’” said Lee Rainie, director for the Pew Internet & American Life Project, which performed the study in tandem with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The study also found that people 18 to 30 years old were the age group most likely to have recently used a library. “They are the most recently in school,” said Mr. Rainie, “so they potentially have a better sense of the way that libraries have become more wired and more high-tech.”
