Michigan librarian, Carolyn Wheeler, wins NYT award

wheeler Carolyn Wheeler, Media Specialist at Conant Elementary School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, is a recipient of the national 2009 I Love My Librarian Award, sponsored by the New York Times and the Carnegie Corporation of New York.  Congratulations, Carolyn!

Her nomination praised her stellar work with students, as follows:

This wonderful teacher and leader not only makes the school a better place by her establishment and maintenance of a warm, comfortable, communal area in which all are equally welcome, but she strives to make the world a better place by consistently role modeling for colleagues and generations of students, the virtues of non-judgmental behavior, tolerance, and responsibility. There are several classes of deaf and hard of hearing students at Conant, from pre-school through fourth grade. Carolyn makes certain that they have equal access to all her services and has made some changes to the library collections to accommodate them, and to encourage hearing students to learn to communicate with them, just as she has always done for those children who are limited English speaking.

“Carolyn has a very strong commitment to community service. She teaches evening classes for women at local community centers (at no charge) and coordinates other classes as well. She works with a local homeless shelter. Whenever appropriate, she offers the opportunities to participate in service to others to students, their families, and school staff. At major holiday times, they are reminded of those less fortunate, and they are aware of their responsibility to accept and help others.

“Early this year, Carolyn led a group of volunteers in organizing, planning, funding, and preparing a hot meal and ensuring a place to sleep for the night for many homeless families.  First graders designed napkins and place cards, second graders designed the place mats, and in one way or another, all classes contributed. Not only did they provide a full dinner at the church that agreed to house the families, but they also had enough food to package lunches for them for the following day. This was a relevant, first-hand learning experience for the adults and the children who contributed, reinforced by reading the summary of grateful and moving remarks on the evaluation sheets shared with the group by the sheltering organization. This was far more effective teaching than any story that could be read to kids!

It is wonderful to see one of our own Michigan librarians honored by this prestigious award.  Previous winners from Michigan include Gigi Lincoln and Margaret Wolfe.

Call for Papers: Patron-Initiated Collection Development

Posted on behalf of Purdue University Libraries:

Call For Papers: Special Issue of Collection Management
Patron-Initiated Collection Development:
Current Successes and Future Directions

To be published in v. 35, no. 3/4 of Collection Management in 2010.  Seeking article proposals from colleagues at all kinds of libraries (all sizes of academic libraries, public libraries, and international libraries) about patron-initiated collection development, such as:

-interlibrary loan book purchase programs
-experiences with allowing patron use or selection to drive acquisition of electronic books
-consortial collection development plans with strong patron-driven acquisitions elements
-other innovative patron-initiated selection activities for materials in a variety of formats
-implications for the future roles of collection librarians in an environment of increased user-driven Acquisitions
-user discovery of patron-initiated collection development plans

The editors are particularly interested in proposals for articles that will that include evaluation/assessment/analysis.

Background

The special issue editors are members of the team that published the following article:

Anderson, Kristine J., Robert S. Freeman, Jean-Pierre V. M. Herubel, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk, Judith M. Nixon, and Suzanne M. Ward.  2002.  “Buy, Don’t Borrow: Bibliographers’ Analysis of Academic Library Collection Development through Interlibrary Loan Requests.”  Collection Management, 27(3/4): 1-11.

This article analyzed six subject areas for books purchased instead of borrowed as the result of interlibrary loan requests in 2000-2001.  Now that ILL book purchases have been standard procedure at the Purdue University Libraries for ten years, the authors and their colleagues will analyze this decade’s worth of information to explore the following topics in a series of four articles:

-Revisit the initial study by comparing earlier findings with more recent data
- Analyze the ILL book purchase program in relation to scientific/technical/medical (STM) titles
-Conduct in-depth statistical analysis across a decade of data, looking at issues such as patron status, subject areas as indicated by call number, subsequent circulation, comparison with similar subject area books acquired through traditional means, etc.
-Position paper on new roles for collection librarians.  As user-initiated collection development frees time and effort from traditional collection duties and responsibilities, how will academic librarians develop and nurture emerging objectives and prerogatives, e.g. teaching, research?

The accepted articles from colleagues at other institutions will complement the four listed above.

Deadlines

November 13, 2009: Submit an abstract (maximum of one page) with the title and your proposed article idea.  Your full contact information may appear on a separate page, but please include your name, institution, and email address on the abstract page.

December 4, 2009:  The editors will notify authors whether their proposals have been accepted.

February 28, 2010: Submit completed article (10-25 double spaced pages).

Please submit abstracts and address correspondence to Judy Nixon (jnixon@purdue.edu) with this subject line: CM article proposal.  We will be glad to answer any questions and look forward to your article proposals.

MLA Launches Website: Michigan Libraries for the Future

Today, MLA launched its new advocacy website, Michigan Libraries for the Future.

MLA President, Larry Neal, writes:

“Today as part of MLA’s Leadership Orientation we have officially launched our new advocacy website. It will serve as an easy way for library advocates to send their message to Lansing. By clicking on the “Write Your Legislator” button they can send a customized e-mail message to their legislators. I hope I can count on every library in Michigan to link to the website so people will act on our request. You will also be able to ‘Tell A Friend’ and forward the alerts to build a strong grassroots network with friends, trustees and library patrons.

“For those of you who serve on boards or know of boards that would be willing to support our position, there is a full resolution on the Press Kit page that you can use and tailor to your needs. I challenge any of you to read it without getting upset about the fact that we have to spend any of our time doing this in the first place.

“Next steps will include providing a downloadable bookmark, targeted points of view, and sample letters to the editor. I will send out further messages as these tools become available shortly. Also, be sure to join the 200 and growing fans of MLA’s Facebook page and sign up for tweets from our new Twitter service (links on new website)!

“Further, plans are coming together for our rally on the steps of the State Capital on Thursday, September 10. The time is 10 a.m. Attire is anything RED (thanks for the idea Bryon Sitler). Also, please contact me if you are able to bring your bookmobile. I keep hearing about how passionate people are about our profession and what we do. I hope to see lots of you and members of your community there. We will not let Lansing “shush” us. We will be heard.

“And last, but not least, as our list of supporters grows, I would like to thank the Michigan Library Consortium for its support, partnership and commitment to this major campaign to protect the Library of Michigan and MeL/MeLCat.”
